7 Truths I Learned in 2017 | Guest Post

With the first half of 2017 out of here, I have had time to reflect on how my year has been. Let me preface this post by saying that a lot has happened this year for me. I’ve graduated college, rebranded my blog, trying to figure out my life in general, but this year has definitely been good for me.

That in mind, I want to share with y’all 7 truths I have learned so far in the first half of 2017.

1. Say yes to new adventures

This year I have said yes to a lot of things that would have freaked me out. New travels, new opportunities, new outlooks. Saying yes to new adventures will open new doors that you previously never thought would be open.

2. Don’t stay quiet because it makes someone uncomfortable

I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression 9 years ago. For eight and a half of those years, I stayed quiet about. I pretended it wasn’t there. Then I watched a play at my university my fall of my senior year and it was all about mental illnesses.

Our theatre department worked with our counseling center to channel all of the illnesses projected on that side. Because of that play, I am no longer silent about what I am facing, about mental health, about the stigma that surrounds it. I am no longer silent because my theatre department wasn’t. They took a play that would most likely face a lot of backlash in today’s society and owned it.

So if something is really important to you-whether it is fighting for equality, mental health awareness, feminism, LGBTQ rights, ANYTHING, do NOT stay silent because it might make people uncomfortable. Start screaming from the rooftops. We are not the generation to stay quiet.

3. Never be afraid to love on your friends

Let me be the first to say that my friends and family are killin’ it at the game of life. I am so proud of them and all the other fellow boss babes that are slayin’ it. Growing up, I was afraid to brag on my friends because I thought it made it weird, but guess what? It doesn’t! Sometimes without even realizing it, our friends need that extra boost.

I seriously love bragging on my friends all the time. One is marrying the love of her life, one picked up her entire life and moved across the country AND took a semester of all online classes, one works two jobs and still finds time to be social and get grades, etc. etc. Cheer on your friends, I can promise you that you will feel great about it.

4. Shatter glass ceilings

This goes to all my girls but I guess it could apply to guys as well. For so long, we wanted to be princesses with glass slippers and finding our prince charmings. Not anymore. Learn to worry less about fitting into those glass slippers and shatter those glass ceilings. Work for your dreams. Make them reality. Do not stop until you are happy with what you have. This year so far, I have seen groups of women do amazing things. Let’s keep that going ladies.

5.Change is so good

It might not always be something you want, but change will always surprise you. It can lead you to so many great things without you even realizing it.

6.Lose the want to be “cool”

Cool is overrated. Give me dancing in the car, belting out tunes, dancing in the supermarket, loud laughs and wearing whatever you want.

7.Never lose sight of who you are

As cliché and probably overrated as this sounds, I don’t think anyone can stress this enough. You might think you want to be someone else because they look cool or you want someone to like you. But there is nothing amazing than being exactly you. Also, you were made to be you, not someone else.

2017… You have been one heck of a year so far. I am so excited to see where the rest of you will take me.

Until next time lovelies,
XOXO, Mik
